Bel Ami

It is true that there are those among us who accumulate all the blessings, being at the same time intelligent and beautiful. Well, they surely exist, but are as rare as a four-leaf clover or a freaking solar eclipse. All the planets must be alligned to produce one such a phenomenon, all odds must cooperate and, all in all, these people don’t have to be counted on the census, given that they’re not a significative number. Anyway, most of us have to be contented to only having one of such traits, almost as if they were muttually exclusive (and sometimes I do think they are).

Anyway, I digress enough. The thing is, I jst finished reading Guy de Maupassant’s “Bel Ami”, and it occurred to me that the best place one could fit in the statistical line that ranges from the smart to the pretty, would definitely be on the pretty extreme. Even the beautiful-and-smart aberrations are not as fortunate as those who have only the looks. Good loooks come almost completely by chance. They have no great costs, no great responsibilities. Ignorance is bliss, after all, and such bliss can be better enhanced when it inhabits a beautiful body.

Bel Ami, the main characther of the story, is a handsome man who builds all his fortune based on the lovers he acquire. Quickly, he overcomes those around he who can only count on wits to strive, and the story gives me this sense of reality that intellectuality makes up for a decent blog, but not as easily to a successfull carrer.

In any case, I had a lot more to write on this matter, but I am out of time right now (one of the great things about a personal self-centered blog is that you can tell people you just couldn’t write everything in time for the post). Also, as said Bon Jovi, “there’s a bottle of vodka still lodged in my head”. When it comes out, I’ll come back to this theme and better develop my thoughts on this matter. For conclusion, I just want to add that the point of the whole thing is that I would prefer a thousand times to be born stupid and beautiul (as Bel-Ami seems to me) than a hardworking intellectual (and not even that I am!).

Good carnival everybody!
